Types of Operation Theatre (OT)

An Operation theatre (OT/OR) is specialized facility designed for the performance of surgical procedures. Operation theatre are designed and organized according to the specific medical specialty or type of surgery being conducted, with each theatre tailored to meet the unique requirements of the procedures performed within it.

Types of Operation Theatre Categorized by Size

  1. Major Operation Theatre (Major OT)

A Major Operation Theatre ( Major OT) is a specialized facility within a hospital designed for performing complex and high-risk surgeries. These theatres are equipped with advanced biomedical equipment, which are essential for ensuring the safety and success of critical surgical procedures.

  1. Minor Operation Theatre (Minor OT)

A Minor Operation Theatre (Minor OT) is a smaller surgical facility designed for less complex procedures that do not require the advanced biomedical equipment found in a Major OT. These theatres typically handle minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and interventions that are less invasive and less critical. The setup for a Minor OT is simpler compared to a Major OT, often lacking the need for specialized equipment like the C-arm or complex anesthesia machines. Minor OT have smaller space compared to Major OT with Basic surgical instruments and equipment. Suitable for outpatient or quick recovery procedures and focus on less invasive procedures requiring minimal anesthesia and post-operative care.
